~Annual General Meeting and Conference~
The Annual General Meeting and Conference has been in operation since 1963. It provides an opportunity for members to gather and fulfill the business obligations of the society, to become informed on new developments in archaeology, and to socialize.
The challenge facing any organization is to accomplish the business requirements but, at the same time, provide programming to attract member and general public attendance. Holding the Annual General Meeting in different locations eventually provides all members with equal ease of access. There are speakers, workshops, and other events on the program to inspire and encourage members to continue their invaluable support for the SAS.
The Annual General Meeting and Conference is traditionally held the last weekend in April. For more details click here.
~Fall Bus Tour~
We present this two-day bus tour to sites of archaeological, historical, and natural heritage interest over the Thanksgiving weekend. Operating since 1981, past trips have involved touring many fascinating sites throughout Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, North Dakota, and Montana. For more details click here.
~Field School~
Each year we offer field schools of two types: one, a survey field school, that involves field mapping of important tipi rings and boulder configuration sites and the other the chance to participate in an excavation. The survey field school is generally held the third weekend of July and the excavation at the end of June or the first week of July.
This program is open to the general public of all ages. It accomplishes two main purposes:
- It provides exposure to scientific archaeological methods and conservation of archaeological resources and
- It provides hands-on experience and an appreciation of the value of our archaeological heritage.
Both are fun! For more details click here.

~A Traveling Exhibition on Northern Saskatchewan Rock Art
Kiwetinohk: Rock Paintings of Northern Saskatchewan~
The Saskatchewan Archaeological Society has developed an exhibition, entitled Kiwetinohk: Rock Paintings of Northern Saskatchewan on the colourful and ancient rock paintings found on the cliffs along the Churchill River and other waterways of the Boreal Forest in northern Saskatchewan. This region holds 70 known sites out of approximately 700 that have been found on the bedrock cliffs of the Canadian Shield. Archaeological and ethnological evidence points to a primarily Algonkian-speakers authorship, and while the exact age of all individual sites has yet to be determined, a number are documented to be several hundred years old, possibly as old as 2000 years or more.
No such exhibition on the Canadian Shield rock art tradition has been available for touring before this. This exhibition is now ready for circulation. For information regarding exhibition characteristics, logistics and costs click here.

~One-Day Archaeology Workshops~
The Saskatchewan Archaeological Society, in meeting its public education mandate, presents a variety of opportunities for the lay person to learn about the 10,000 year history of human habitation in Saskatchewan and about archaeology, which is the science that studies such questions.
The Society has prepared a set of 8 educational workshops, each a full day in length (9:30 a.m. to 5:00 with lunch and coffee breaks). Many of these workshops are presented in conjunction with the province’s Regional Colleges.
It is suggested that people participate in the introductory workshop before doing so with any of the others, since everything else builds on the individual’s overall understanding of the topic. Having said that, each of the workshops is intended to stand alone; there is no particular order to in which to take them.
The focus is to provide anyone who either has a bit of knowledge of the subject, or none at all, with a good overview of the particular subject of the workshop. All workshops will provide what may best be described as an “in-depth overview” of the subject. With the exception of #8, the intensive focus of each workshop is on Saskatchewan. Generally, there will be an attempt to focus on the archaeological sites and artifacts found in the area where the workshop is being presented.
Each workshop will consist of the following elements:
- Lecture information
- Slides and video illustrations
- Artifacts to examine
- Hands-on activities (including exposure to “experimental” archaeology)
- Printed handout information for future reference, including further reading
Qualified professional archaeologists are the instructors for each of the workshops, and a brief biographical note on their training and specialties will be provided for advertising purposes.
The Workshop Topics:
- Introduction to Archaeology
- Identifying Saskatchewan Artifacts
- Lithics and Archaeology
- Ethnology and Archaeology
- Geology and Archaeology
- Bones and Archaeology
- Ceramics and Archaeology
- Middle Eastern Archaeology
We also occasionally offer hands-on workshops demonstrating pottery-making and flintknapping.
