Teaching Archaeology in Schools

Thank you for taking the time to incorporate archaeology into your classroom. This resource is meant as a guide to be used and modified to suit your styles and needs. Your professional feedback is welcomed. We look forward to hearing from you!

Here is an example of students learning about archaeology first hand. St. Maria Goretti and St. Mary's Community Schools in Saskatoon, SK put together a presentation of their students attending the SAS field school at South Branch House. Click here to view the presenation!!

This resource, developed by the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society (SAS), is to be used by educators and students to learn about archaeology and how it can be applied as teaching material for classroom studies. The SAS hopes that this will be a useful tool for teachers, allowing them to easily incorporate archaeological topics and activities into their classroom. This program is specifically designed for Saskatchewan students in grades four to nine, but could easily be adapted for all levels and methods of learning.

How to Use This Resource:
This resource is divided into three sections that can be accessed independently or in combination. Educational Outcomes, A Teaching Guide to Saskatchewan Archaeology, and Activities.

Section 1: Incorporating Archaeology into Lesson Plans: Educational Outcomes from the Saskatchewan Curriculum - Grades 4 through 9
Using the Saskatchewan Evergreen Curriculum, this section identifies all subjects, grades four through nine, that can be linked to archaeological teachings. The subjects include Arts Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. These have been divided by grade and then applicable subjects within each grade. The left-hand column is a direct excerpt from the Saskatchewan Evergreen Curriculum. The right-hand column is the link to archaeology. Below each subject is a list of activities and resources for educators to access. These activities and resources can be found oulined below in Section 3.

Section 2: A Teaching Guide to Saskatchewan Archaeology (companion document to Educational Outcomes in Section 1)
This section introduces the teachers to archaeology, how teachers can incorporate archaeology into their lesson plans, how archaeology functions as a discipline and outlines the archaeological history of Saskatchewan. This section also examines 12 Saskatchewan landscapes and the culture history of each which directly links to the SAPA's (Saskatchewan Association of Professional Archaeologists) Map of Saskatchewan Archaeology. The SAPA Map contains information about where archaeological sites are located in Saskatchewan, highlights significant sites and museums in the province and outlines the cultural history of Saskatchewan. A copy of this map was delivered to every school in Saskatchewan in 2008. Copies of the map can be obtained directly from the Saskatchewan Archaeological Society.
