Apeetogsan: Uncovering the Story of Saskatchewan’s Métis People
Abstract: The Métis people of this province have often been referred to by historians as “The Forgotten People.” We all can play a role in healing this fragmented history by reconstructing and rethinking the Métis experience within this province. This keynote speech will discuss how rich and abundant this province is with Métis history, culture, and
archaeology. In particular the story about the role of Métis women in the fur trade will be examined through the medium of artistic expression. There is much hope for the future of this province as we all begin to heal historical wounds and open the doorway to a new paradigm of partnership and togetherness.
We have booked a block of rooms at the Comfort Inn (3863 2nd Ave. W.) and Travelodge (3551 2nd Ave. W.) in Prince Albert. Say you are with the SAS to get the group rate. For a downloadable Travelodge booking form click here.

~Field Schools~
Come and dig with us! No experience necessary! All ages welcome!
The SAS will be hosting two separate field schools during the 2010 field season. We guarantee that your experience will be unique and incredible. Come learn more about Saskatchewan’s history first-hand! We hope you can participate in both opportunities.
Field School Opportunity 1: South Branch House Provincial Historic Site.
When: Thursday, July 8 to Sunday, July 11, 2010
South Branch House is a fur trade post site on the South Saskatchewan River that was occupied from 1786 to 1794 when it was abandoned after a battle between the European fur traders and Gros Ventre individuals.
Excavation of South Branch House is an ongoing research project being conducted by the S.A.S. A thorough translation of the Hudson’s Bay company journal records of South Branch House has been completed. During the excavation of the site over the last five years, however, evidence has been found to suggest that the Society has been digging at - the site that has been designated since the 1940s - may not, in fact, be the HBC South Branch House. Another possiblity is that one cluster of features at the "site" is correct while the other cluster is another site entirely. Come be a part of unravelling this mystery with us!
This is also an archaeological “dig”. The work will be conducted under the supervision of Talina Cyr-Steenkamp and students hired for the summer’s field season. No previous experience is necessary!
Field School Opportunity 2: Wolf Willow Site: Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
When: Thurday, July 15 to Sunday, July 18, 2010
The University of Saskatchewan Department of Archaeology and Anthropology will be starting research at a previously unexcavated site in Wanuskewin. What is currently known is that this is a pre-European contact site, one of 19 in the park. We look forward to finding out more about the Wolf Willow site and assisting the University in its work.
This is an archaeological “dig”, involving careful yet enjoyable techniques to discover artefacts and features of Saskatchewan’s past peoples. Join archaeologists Maria Mampe of the University of Saskatchewan and Talina Cyr-Steenkamp of the S.A.S. for this exciting dig! No previous experience is necessary!

~Bus Tour~
The 2009 was a wonderful adventure. It was held from Saturday, October 10th to Monday, October 12th. Leaving from Saskatoon, the group visited "Original Humboldt" and the Humboldt Museum, Fort Alexandria and a precontact lithic workshop near Canora, SK, the archaeological, geological sites of the Swan River Valley, MB, and the Upper Red Deer River Fort near Hudson Bay, SK. Thank you to all of the local residents who were so welcoming. A huge thank you to Gary Wowchuk who not only gave a presentation at our Thanksgiving banquet on Saturday but also guided us through the Swan River area on Sunday.
Contact the S.A.S. for more information.
The 2010 bus tour will is being held on September 25 and 26! We will leave from Saskatoon, SK and follow some of the well known and perhaps more of the lesser known events of the 1885 Riel Resistance. The majority of the trip will focus on the Battlefords region of Saskatchewan. You can be sure to see sites and meet people that the general public does not have access to on a regular basis. We guarantee you will enjoy yourselves. Please read ahead to learn about our exciting itinerary! NOTE: THE 2010 BUS TOUR WILL NOT BE HELD DURING THE THANKSGIVING WEEKEND as it has been for the past several years. We hope that this will give more people the opportunity to participate.
Download the brochure: will be available in April 2010.
